Sorry for the delay in posting your comment- they only just registered and all 3 at the same time! I swear I wasn't trying to censor you :)
I didn't mean to imply that Dale was the only moral character, and I completely agree with your summation that the nature and actions of the characters is a large part of the show's appeal. I was just looking at Dale more from an analytical point of view similar to how someone would break down & simplify characters roles in a novel in order to discuss how they fit into the bigger picture and what their absence will do to the story, as well as the other characters. It was more my feeling that Dale played the role of the "wise old man" and the "conscience" of the group. The same way that I'd say Rick plays the humble & almost reluctant "hero" role vs. Daryl's very clear anti-hero role.
Of course there are times when each character is at his or her best and worst and I like that every once in a while their actions take me by complete surprise (like Rick just blowing away those two guys in the bar! Awesome- and necessary in my opinion- but still shocking.) But what matters is that the show makes us think about what we think they should do, what we would do, whether or not they were morally in the right, what's most important in a time like that, etc. That's what good storytelling is supposed to do & I'm glad you appreciate that since I hear so many complaints from people about the show being boring or pointless when it's neither!
I'm dying for Season 3! The Governor, the Prison, Michonne, Tyreese, Merle and the era of the "Rick-tatorship"- plus the return of Talking Dead, which I totally love- I can not wait for my weekly doses of ZA hijinks to be back on schedule!

I don't know why everyone says "Oh, Dale was the only voice of reason and morality," blah blah blah...there are a number of morally good characters in the series. They might not wear their opinions and feelings on their sleeves like Dale did, but their actions of bravery, sacrifice, and kindness speak louder than words.

Yes, Dale was a really good person and I'm sad to see him leave the show, but so are Rick, Daryl, Maggie, Glenn, Herschel, and Andrea. Sure, they aren't perfect--but human beings never are--and by the way, neither was Dale. They are all flawed but interesting and morally decent characters who are tested under extraordinary circumstances--and that's what makes the show so compelling on so many levels.

Can't wait for S3, 'sall I'm sayin'.
